The fire broke out over the weekend, and has burned about 800 acres. No homes are threatened, but some campgrounds have been evacuated. The threat to Big Bear has been described as "moderate" by fire officials. The Pacific Crest Trail was closed between Highway 18 and Van Dusen Road. Normal temperatures at this time hover around 85 degrees. American Airlines pilot Shane Coffey said extreme heat creates changes in the air density that make it harder for airplanes to take off, meaning pilots have to use more thrust or impose weight restrictions such as flying with less cargo.
