Kidder had a debilitating auto accident in 1990 that left her badly in debt, confined her to a wheelchair for most of two years and worsened the mental illness she had struggled with for much of her life.

The starlet also had starring roles in 1975 drama The Great Waldo Pepper and 1979 thriller The Amityville Horror. She had banked a 10-year body of work in TV and movies by the time "Superman" arrived.
