Ex-CIA man named as suspect in Vault 7 leak

Suspect Identified in CIA Leak Was Charged, but Not for the Breach

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Joshua Adam Schulte is believed to have leaked the code from the CIA's Engineering Development Group, information that was published by WikiLeaks in March 2017.

"Those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with [Schulte's] involvement in that disclosure", said assistant US attorney in the Southern District of New York Matthew Laroche.

Weaver added that the fact the leak could happen was more significant as it came well after NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden released masses of documents about the agency's surveillance of American citizens in 2013.

The report says that, while the government thinks Schulte was the one who handed the cache of documents over to WikiLeaks, they do not now have enough evidence to bring charges.

Schulte has been housed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center ever since. However, during a court hearing in January, attorneys revealed that Schulte was also the target of a federal investigation into whether he had shared classified material from the Central Intelligence Agency with WikiLeaks.

Schulte has actually been in jail since being indicted for possession of child pornography last September. Schulte has pleaded not guilty, and argued that anywhere from 50 to 100 people had access to the server that he designed several years ago for sharing movies and other digital files.

Schulte's father, Roger, said he was scared to death.

Government prosecutors say Joshua Adam Schulte of NY is a target in the theft investigation.

The CIA declined to comment. He maintained the agency targeted him because he was the only member of his team to leave the agency after reporting "incompetent management" to the CIA's inspector general.

"Due to these unfortunate coincidences the Federal Bureau of Investigation ultimately made the snap judgment that I was guilty of the leaks and targeted me", Schulte said.

It is noted that despite the long months of investigation, prosecutors have been unable to charge him.

Since he's been jailed, Schulte has created a Facebook page where he posts articles criticizing the criminal justice system. And I would disagree with the defense counsel's characterization that those search warrants haven't yielded anything that is consistent with his involvement in that disclosure. Laroche was actually describing a "characterization" by Schulte's attorneys and expressing disagreement.
