Experimental Vaccine Will be Used against Ebola Outbreak in the DRC

What is Ebola and why is it back?

The DRC government, the World Health Organization, and aid agencies have learned from previous Ebola outbreaks, health workers and scientists already in the area of the latest one to try to determine who else has possibly been infected. Wangata health zone is adjacent to the provincial port city of Mbandaka (population 1.2 million).

The shot, which was tested in Guinea in 2015 at the end of a vast Ebola outbreak in West Africa, is designed for use in a so-called "ring vaccination" approach.

Most of the cases so far have been recorded around the village of Ikoko Impenge, near the northwestern town of Bikoro, Salama said.

Though additional information on the outbreak is limited, the event did not trigger a public health warning, the organisation said. The 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa involved major urban areas as well as rural ones.

It said 393 people who identified as contacts of Ebola patients were being followed up. Among the dead were three health-care workers. In addition to an importation license, the World Health Organization needs formal agreement on the research protocols with the government and local ethical review board approval for reasons of liability, and legal and insurance issues associated with use of experimental products, he added.

Tedros led a WHO delegation that included Matshidiso Moeti, MD, WHO regional director for Africa, and Peter Salama, MD, WHO deputy director-general, emergency preparedness and response.

Since the publication of the first Disease Outbreak News on the Ebola outbreak in Equateur province, Democratic Republic of the Congo on 10 May 2018, an additional seven suspected cases have been notified by the country's Ministry of Health. "It's a highly complex operation in one of the most hard terrains in the world". The epicenter, a town called Bikoro, is hard to reach by vehicle because of poor roads between it and the regional capital, Mbandaka. That work is vital both to encourage people to agree to be vaccinated and to figure out if any local practices are increasing the risk the virus will spread. On May 13, the WHO delivered two shipments from Geneva and Dubai with more than 30 tonnes of equipment, including Personal Protective Equipment kits, Interagency Emergency Health Kits, boxes for transportation, and body bags.

A cordon ribbon is seen around the isolation ward at Bikoro hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
