Uber is in the midst of its "Uber Elevate" summit in LosAngeles, the same conference, held a year ago in Dallas, at which the company first announced its air taxi initiative.
Uber Technologies said on Tuesday it signed an agreement with U.S. space agency NASA to explore concepts and technologies needed for passenger and cargo air transportation within an urban area. "It will allow the Army to rapidly advance mutually beneficial technology to inform objectives for silent and efficient VTOL, or vertical takeoff and landing operation, for the next generation fleet of Army unmanned air vehicles". According to the agreement, Uber will share its concept of flying taxi and all the information related to it.
However, Uber stated that it will not venture directly in manufacturing the vehicles but will work with industry leaders to produce vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircrafts that will use the uberAIR network.
One of the main focuses of the UAM project is the development of passenger-carrying aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing, the US space agency pointed out.
Initially, the partnership between NASA and Uber centered on general modeling and simulations, but the pair have now signed another deal that applies this to real-world airspace.
Uber launched its Elevate programme in October 2016. Analysis of these simulations will identify safety issues as these new aircraft take to the air in a crowded air traffic control system. Uber plans to start flight demonstrations in LosAngeles by 2020, and launch commercial flights by 2023.
"We want to create the network around those vehicles so that regular people can take these taxis in the air for longer distances when they want to avoid traffic at affordable prices", Khosrowshahi said.
