President Trump approves disaster declaration in Hawaii

Villagers look on as Mount Sinabung volcano spews thick volcanic ash in Karo Indonesia on Friday May 19

Kilauea volcano began erupting lava into a residential neighborhood on the Big Island on May 3.

The observatory also said that the withdrawal of lava from the summit lake of Halemaumau crater could lead to a steam-driven eruption. As the magma shifted underground, a magnitude-6.9 natural disaster also rocked the Big Island.

The Hawaii Volcano Observatory reported "no significant lava flow" from a new fissure Saturday morning, but said that "conditions could change quickly".

"The situation remains unstable", she said.

Willie Nunn, the FEMA federal coordinating officer in the affected area, said that "additional designations may be made at a later date" depending on further damage assessments.

Thousands of people have now been forced to evacuate, and the eruption has already destroyed dozens of structures.

Hannique Ruder, 65, a resident of the Leilani Estates subdivision, stands on a mound of hardened lava near Pahoa, Hawaii, May 11, 2018.

Residents on the Big Island of Hawaii were alerted on Thursday to rising levels of toxic gas from lava-oozing fissures, and geologists warned that new areas east of the erupting Kilauea volcano may be at risk of molten rock bursting from the ground. Since then, lava has destroyed at least 25 homes and covered over 117 acres. Ige expects the estimated fix costs from the Kilauea volcano to exceed $2.9 million over the next month.

President Donald Trump has declared Hawaii with volcanic eruptions since last week a disaster zone, as the Big Island braces for more volcanic eruption damage.

The Hawaii National Guard is prepared, with only 90-minutes notice, to rescue some 2,000 people by ground convoy in troop-carrying vehicles and, if necessary, in Blackhawk or Chinook helicopters. The recent volcanic activity in Hawaii has also caused countless earthquakes, including a magnitude 6.9 natural disaster on May 4m which was the strongest quake to strike Hawaii since 1975.

As a result, rockfalls from the enclosing crater walls have produced small ash clouds mixed with condensed water vapour throughout the day.
