NASA To Send Mini-Helicopter To Mars For First Interplanetary Travel

Уфологи обнаружили на Марсе мертвого пришельца принесенного в жертву

According to the source, the Mars Helicopter will be bundled with the United States space agency's Mars rover when it launches in 2020.

The Mars Helicopter, which will no doubt undergo a name change when NASA sets up a contest for school children, will be a technology demonstrator to determine how aerial drones will fly on the Red Planet.

Soviet scientists dropped two balloons into the atmosphere of Venus in the 1980s.

But JPL has made sure that the Mars Helicopter has everything it needs to courageous the rough environment on the Red Planet. "The atmosphere of Mars is only one percent that of Earth, so when our helicopter is on the Martian surface, it's already at the Earth equivalent of 100,000 feet up", explained Mimi Aung, Mars Helicopter project manager at JPL.

The 1.8 kilogram (3.9 pound) chopper is "a high-risk, high-reward project", the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) said in a statement on Friday.

The mission is scheduled to launch in July 2020 to study the implications of using "heavier-than-air vehicles" on the Red Planet.

Flying on the red planet is not easy. NASA also packed in a heating mechanism to help the drone survive the frigid Mars nights.

The helicopter is supposed to be used to achieve points on the surface of Mars, where you will not be able to get the Rover. Equipped with solar cells to power it over a 30-day test campaign, its blades would spin three times quicker than a normal helicopter, or around 3,000 revolutions a minute so as to handle the planet's atmosphere, which is 100 times thinner than Earth's. After placing the helicopter on earth, the rover is going to be told to drive to a safe space to relay orders.

"After the Wright Brothers demonstrated 117 years ago that a controlled flight here on Earth was possible, another group of American pioneers can prove that the same can happen in another world", said Thomas Zurbuchen, Deputy Director of the Science Division of NASA. "Instead, we have an autonomous capability that will be able to receive and interpret commands from the ground, and then fly the mission on its own", she said.

A successful test could open the door to using helicopters as scouts on future missions, surveying terrain that might be hard for rovers to navigate and even accessing locations that are unreachable via ground travel.

These images released by NASA show the surface of Mars.
