Li receives warm welcome to Japan from Abe

Moon Support from China Japan Essential on Road to Peace on Peninsula

Meanwhile, according to the report of Chinese state radio, Li had also spoken to Moon about the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System now installed in Seoul and said that he hopes the issue will be handled appropriately.

Li arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday for an official visit to Japan and to attend the 7th China-Japan-South Korea leaders' meeting.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Thursday said that he hoped that China and Japan would carry forward the spirit of the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship to push for new progress in bilateral relations.

This is the best way to commemorate the signing of China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Li told a reception marking the 40th anniversary of the treaty in Tokyo.

The state visit implies a thaw in the long-standing hostile relations between the two countries, which ensued from territorial disputes over East China Sea islands and grievances from World War II.

Li announced the decision during his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo.

China is to also donate a pair of crested ibises, which were once extinct in Japan.

In the economic sphere, Li said both sides are willing to bring bilateral pragmatic cooperation to a higher level, and achieve more mutually beneficial cooperation.

The premier called on Japan to align its development strategies with the Belt and Road Initiative, boost cooperation in innovation and high-end manufacturing.

The two countries, Abe said at the reception, can jointly shoulder greater responsibility in resolving regional issues, such as jointly promoting infrastructure construction in Asia by setting up a trans-departmental committee.

Earlier on Thursday, Li also visited Japanese Emperor Akihito and several leading politicians.

Abe and Li on Friday attended a forum created to promote exchanges between Japanese and Chinese local authorities. New opportunities will come for pragmatic cooperation between China and Japan.
