Israeli forces shoot dead Palestinian on Gaza border

Ides of May

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said his country will have to pay "a price" for the USA decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. "IDF troops are responding with riot dispersal means and are firing in accordance with the rules of engagement", the Israeli military said, vowing to defend the border "and ensure the security of the citizens of Israel and Israeli sovereignty, as necessary".

Essential services in Gaza are "barely able to function" after "years of blockade, internal divide and a chronic energy crisis", the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs also stated this week. It did not provide details on how the IDF would do so.

Witnesses said Israeli forces on the other side of the fence had added reinforcements, including cement slabs, as protective cover.

Rioters were "violent, burning tires and hurling rocks", the IDF said in a statement.

Later on Friday evening, dozens of demonstrators broke into the main commercial crossing point known as Kerem Shalom on the border between southern Gaza Strip and Israel, and damaged Israeli watching cameras placed outside the crossing point.

On the Israeli border, Israelis are watching wearily, and are well aware of Hamas' plan to get supporters to try and storm the security fence and cross into Israel, CBS News' Seth Doane reports.

A Palestinian protester was killed and 49 were wounded by Israeli army fire during demonstrations on the Gaza-Israel border, the Gaza Health Ministry has said. The vast majority of people killed at or near the fence have been Hamas and other terror group members.

The Israeli army has rejected repeated pleas by the worldwide community - including the United Nations - to use restraint and to conduct an independent inquiry into the deaths, maintaining the necessity of its open-fire policy, which it says targets "terrorists". Sinwar has vowed in the past that protesters would "breach the borders and pray at Al-Aqsa", referring to the major Muslim shrine in Jerusalem.

Reham previously received counseling after Israel's 51-day war on Gaza in summer 2014.

Hamas has said if the protests "don't achieve their goals", they will continue.

The Palestinians want the right to return to land they were forced to leave behind in 1948 when the state of Israeli was formed.

For the last few weeks, city planners and workers have been sprucing up the neighborhood, cleaning, planting flowers and re-painting street markings.

No Israeli government would ever be likely to accept this demand, since it would spell the end of Israel as a Jewish-majority state.

The Palestinian diaspora has since become one of the largest in the world.
