Elon Musk's first traffic busting tunnel under LA is nearly complete

The innovative entrepreneur behind Tesla and SpaceX is now shifting his focus to a realm that some might consider to be more complex and challenging than luxury automobiles and intergalactic travel Affordable housing

The technology mogul, whose companies include Tesla and SpaceX, said on Thursday over Twitter that he's nearly finished building a tunnel under a Los Angeles suburb that will be used to test the system.

In recent news, the PayPal founder posted a video on Instagram showing one of the rail systems in action.

He said the public will be offered free rides on the Loop service in the upcoming months, if the company receives regulatory approval. "Strong support from public, elected officials & regulators is critical to success". He added that once the project is completed that the demo rides will be completely free for the public and will "give priority to pods for pedestrians & cyclists for less than the cost of a bus ticket".

Musk's proposed tunnel system would have stops at various locations spanning from Sherman Oaks to the Long Beach Airport.

The LA tunnel is the first to be built.

A photo shows the Boring Company tunnel beneath Hawthorne, Calif., as of October 2017.

"Super huge thanks to everyone that helped with this project", Musk said on Instagram.

This first tunnel, which will run 2.7 miles through West L.A., was unanimously given an environmental review exemption last month by City Council, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Another interesting tidbit offered by Musk is that Boring Company has begun to build a tunnel between Washington D.C. and NY.

The tunnel is an expansion to the first test of the digging equipment and techniques used, which produced a 100-metre passage starting at the SpaceX carpark in Hawthorne, LA.
