1 detained after reports of armed person at high school in Palmdale

Highland High School in Palmdale California

Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials said they arrested the suspect, also a student, and confiscated the weapon.

They are still trying to pin down the exact motive.

Agents with the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were heading to the scene, the agency said.

The shift of the school resource deputy assigned to the school doesn't begin until 8 a.m. and the officer was on the way to work when the shooting happened, the sheriff said. "Alexander, turn around, turn around, there's an active shooter.' And I didn't really have time to react to that because nearly immediately after that I heard one single gunshot very loud and very close by".

McDonnell said the boy's mother had called the officer earlier in the morning to tell him she and her husband were having trouble with him and that the teen had run away.

"That student is going to be OK", he said. A shooting at the school, she said, has "actually been one of my biggest fears".

Police respond to a possible incident at Highland High School in California.

"There were some kids running from the school, and security and sheriff were telling people to go home", she said.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN.

"I thought he was joking, and I'm like, 'Don't mess around, that's not amusing, '" Salazar said. "And I'm locked up in one of the buildings now'". While police searched for the suspect and secured the area, the school was on lockdown.

"We are incredibly grateful for the actions of Highland High School teachers and staff and our first responders who courageously protected the lives of our students today", Brett Neal, an assistant superintendent for the school district, said in a statement.

Officials had initially said the victim was 14 years old.

Palmdale is north of Los Angeles in the high desert Antelope Valley. He didn't elaborate. The injured student is expected to make a full recovery. Two other students were grazed by bullets. It underscored the national debate over gun control and gun rights that intensified after the February shooting deaths of 17 students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
