Kevin Kamenetz, Maryland gubernatorial candidate, dead at 60

Kevin Kamenetz, Baltimore County Executive and Democratic candidate for governor, dies

Kevin Kamenetz, the executive of Baltimore County and the leading candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination for governor of Maryland, unexpectedly died on Thursday. He was hospitalized at St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was declared dead at 3:22 a.m. He is survived by his wife, Jill Kamenetz, and two teenage sons. Kamenetz was the 12th County Executive of Baltimore County and previously served as a County Councilman representing the Second District of Baltimore County. He awoke at about 2 a.m. complaining of illness and died about an hour later.

Kamenetz was part of a handful of Democrats seeking to run against incumbent Republican Larry Hogan.

On Twitter, Hogan wrote, "the First Lady and I are shocked and grieved by the sudden passing of [Kamenetz]". He leaves behind a wife, Jill, and two teenaged-sons.

The temporary official will oversee the daily operations of county government until a replacement is voted in by the County Council to serve the remaining seven months of Kamenetz's term. Kamenetz had raised more money than his Democratic rivals and was considered a strong contender for the June 26 primary.

"I'm incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz", former NAACP President Ben Jealous said in a statement. Governor Hogan, Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh, Congressman Elijah Cummings and Senator Chris Van Hollen are among the many local and state leaders to express their shock and sorrow on the passing of Kamenetz. "That is a loss to the Democratic party and a loss to the voters of Maryland".

He added: "He was a dedicated public servant in Baltimore County for more than two decades, and we housing the citizens of Baltimore County and all Marylanders in mourning".
