Apple reportedly planning direct subscriptions for video services

Apple bans apps that share users' location data with third-parties

Apple's new video distribution scheme streamlines its subscription system as it does away with the necessity of developing particular apps for the Apple TV and other devices.

Apple is positioning the TV app much like Amazon does with its Channels program, which allows customers to add subscriptions for HBO, Starz and Showtime to Amazon Prime Video.

If Apple were to push through with its plan, the TV app will become the ultimate hub for users to find and stream content.

Apple already taps into subscription revenue for third-party video services when customers subscribe via apps downloaded from the App Store.

The company is expecting to launch this "within the next year" although there is no word on how any of its original programming efforts will factor in.

According to sources close to Apple, the company is planning to roll out this change only next year and that we could hear more changes announced next month at WWDC. Sales from services climbed 31 percent in the most recent quarter, reaching a record $9.2 billion. A user's Apple payment information is used to pay for video services, and the process is completed via third-party apps.

Apple declined to comment on the project.

The irony is that while Apple is the leader in sales of movies and TV shows thanks to iTunes, the tech giant couldn't seem to leverage iTunes to ride the streaming services wave. Netflix and YouTube (owned by rival Alphabet), operate the two largest online video services in the world outside of China.

Apple was rumoured to be working on an actual TV set for a long time but reports pertaining to that stated "the project eventually went nowhere and it's dead now". Apple TV box market share trails rivals Roku, Google Chromecast and Amazon Fire TV, according to research firm EMarketer.
