Twitter could soon add encryption to direct messages

Twitter is testing end-to-end encrypted direct messaging

So far, the "Secret Conversation" tool appears to still be in the early stages of development.

Twitter is reportedly testing an encrypted Direct Messages feature in a bid to make it a more secure place to carry out more sensitive communication.

Jane Manchun Wong, a computer science student at the UMass Dartmouth, discovered the feature when looking inside of the Android application package (APK) for Twitter. She also posted a screenshot of the feature with the tweet. "Encryption", for the uninitiated, is just a fancy term for "secure". It remains to be seen when the end-to-end encryption is officially rolled out.

No less than 18 months ago, Edward Snowden asked Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey for "secret, burn-after-reading DMs" and the swift reply came saying that this request was "reasonable and something we'll think about".

However, there was no commitment from his side regarding the same.

This feature is now under testing and is expected to release to the public soon.

Twitter has been a harbinger to run interference for political altercations on the social platform.

A Twitter secret conversation feature is now under development - potentially adding encrypted direct messages to the popular social media platform. Instant messaging app WhatsApp also uses "end-to-end encryption" while this can be opted into Messenger, as well.

Encryption enables users with correct passcode have access to messages. The need for encryption has been scrutinized by several Tech firms and organisations.

Twitter's DM feature has become a useful way of contacting strangers without acquiring their email address or phone number.

This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. After the introduction of encryption, it can protect the interest of the users.

TechCrunch's article on the subject elicited nothing but a whisper emoji from Jack Dorsey.
