Trump's GOP 'warriors' lead charge against Mueller

President Trump stops to talk with reporters as he departs the White House en route to Dallas last week

He says the goal of the special counsel is to charge associates of President Trump on any crimes he can find in an effort to turn them against the president.

This crew of hard-charging conservatives, whom Trump singled out by name in late April, have emerged as some of Washington's most prominent Republicans, enjoying direct lines to the Trump White House and flights on Air Force One. At least 17 of the attorneys on the team have contributed to Democratic campaigns, according to records maintained by the Federal Election Commission.

The scorched-earth approach by the relatively junior members - only Jordan has served more than 5 years - is in some ways reminiscent of the way a young GOP congressman named Newt Gingrich, joined by a group of back bench House colleagues, shocked Washington in the mid-1980s with their theatrical attacks on Democratic leaders. And Giuliani has called into question whether Trump would be treated fairly by Mueller's prosecutors if he were to agree to an interview.

Sanders said, "I think the point he's making is how ridiculous it is that we're still having this conversation and the depths to which this research has gone on and investigation has been conducted and still produced nothing".

They have demanded thousands of documents central to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

Trump's new lawyer, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, has used a string of media appearances over the past week to cast the probe as a "totally garbage investigation".

The special counsel wants to ask Trump about a number of topics, including the firings of Mike Flynn and James Comey, multiple contacts his advisers had with Russia and the infamous June 2016 sitdown at Trump Tower that Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort had with a Kremlin-connected lawyer and a shady Russian businessman and former spy. Trump wrote on Twitter.

He also criticized Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page and Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok, who made headlines for exchanging derogatory text messages about Trump. "Our Country has to get back to Business!"

Last Friday, Trump said during his address to the National Rifle Association that he "would love" to speak with Mueller because he and his campaign team did "nothing wrong".

In congressional testimony, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has defended Mueller's team against criticism that it was politically tainted.

Tom Fitton, the chief of Judicial Watch, said, "We are pleased, especially after Judge Ellis's hearing, that our lawsuit is causing the Justice Department to rethink its cover-up of the "scope memo" for Mueller". "As soon as he learned about this issue, he took action".
