'Merci Arsene' as Arsenal rout Burnley in Wenger farewell

Wenger manager

Wenger confirmed last month that he will walk away at the end of the season, bringing to an end nearly 22-years in charge of The Arsenal that's seen him win 17 trophies including two doubles and the Invincible season.

Almost 22 year since he first set foot on the pitch at Arsenal's former ground, Highbury, the 68-year-old ended his day with a direct address to the still-packed home stands at the Emirates, after receiving a long chorus of "One Arsene Wenger" from the club's supporters, who were each given a "Merci Arsene" t-shirt.

After 22 years as Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger took charge of his final game at the Emirates stadium on Sunday as Burnley visited North London for a day tinged with nostalgia for the Frenchman and the home support.

"Thank you for having me for such a long time".

A fourth followed in the 64th minute, Iwobi firing into the roof of the net just as Arsenal fans sang about Patrick Vieira, a potential candidate to replace his old boss, while Aubameyang rounded out the scoring by tapping home Hector Bellerin's low cross. Some proud fans3. A parting gift4.

"But I still think Arsenal will come back and compete for the championship".

Arsene Wenger's last game at the Emirates is a match to consolidate 6th place in the Premier League against Burnley. I would like to thank everyone at the club who makes this club so special.

The last three league meetings between the teams were settled in Arsenal's favour by winners beyond the 90th minute, but the hosts made sure there was no need for late drama in Wenger's swansong.

"The Arsene Wenger era is one that Arsenal fans will never forget", said a special 60-page supplementary programme given to supporters.

It's been a superb campaign for Sean Dyche's men that's destined to see them in the Europa League qualifying rounds [at least] next season so we shouldn't be taking anything for granted today if we want to send Wenger off with a win. I don't know how I feel!'.
