Southwest flight makes emergency landing due to broken window

Southwest Flight Diverted To Cleveland For Cracked Window

There were no reports of injuries after Southwest Flight 957 landed safely at Cleveland's Hopkins International Airport on Thursday morning (AEST).

The carrier removed the aircraft from service for "maintenance review" and employees worked "diligently" to rebook passengers on a new aircraft to Newark, Southwest said.

The airline was trying to make arrangements to get the 76 passengers to Newark on another plane.

Bank executive Jennifer Riordan, 43, of Albuquerque, was killed when she was almost sucked out of the plane. "Only outside crack so we're all safe", he tweeted.

The passenger window was broken, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, without providing further details.

Paul Upshaw thought of that as he landed in Cleveland.

The incident comes a little more than two weeks after a passenger was killed when an engine blew out on a Southwest flight and debris shattered a window.

Flight 957 from Chicago to Newark was forced into an emergency landing in Cleveland, Ohio, two hours after take-off.

The airline said that aircraft windows are made of multiple panes and that the crack was in the outer pane.

None of the 81 passengers on the plane was injured and Southwest said its pilots did not request an emergency landing.

There was no depressurization in the cabin, and therefore the oxygen masks were not deployed, FAA spokesman Greg Martin said.

Images posted online seem to show that the damaged window was just behind and above the engine on the left wing of the plane.

The timing of the incident could hardly be worse for Dallas-based Southwest, the nation's fourth-biggest airline.

Southwest estimates the drop in sales will cost the company between $50m and $100m (£37m and £74m).

Last month, the Southwest flight in the headlines had a hole punched clean through the window when an engine broke apart at 30,000 feet, sending [VIDEO]shrapnel into the plane's body and shattering the window.
