Battlefield V Battle Royale Mode In Prototype Stage At DICE

Reddit user Dylan_0202

Earlier this week, Polygon reported that Activision had chose to eschew a traditional single-player campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, to expand on the games multiplayer and Zombies, while possibly entertaining the idea of its own Battle Royale mode. Probably not. As the report claims, DICE is simply prototyping and testing how a battle royale mode might work within the context of Battlefield. Existing battle royale shooters have tens of millions of players, and Fortnite has even reached the nexus where gaming meets wider pop-culture icons like the rapper Drake, who is a huge fan of Epic Games free-to-play battler.

It's easy to see why big companies like EA and Activision are chasing the battle royale dollar; the genre soared to new heights previous year with Playerunknown's Battlegrounds and 2018 to date has been dominated by Epic's free-to-play Fortnite: Battle Royale.

Last month, Venturebeat reported that the next Battlefield game is a core title in the series that returns to World War II. But don't expect to drop onto an island with 99 other players when Battlefield V launches this fall. The game, which is rumored to launch later this year, is still being developed, but that seemingly hasn't stopped the studio from trying to put together a prototype of a battle royale mode. If there's money to be made or a trend to be followed, EA won't be far behind.

According to the rumors, the mode will not be available in time for the game's scheduled October 2018 release and may be released separately via a title update.
