Protests, support rallies and questions await Modi in London

PM Modi leaves for Sweden, to co-host first ever India-Nordic Summit

India's Prime Minister Modi was in Stockholm on Tuesday for the first visit to Sweden by an Indian PM in nearly 30 years. India also credited Scandinavian Nations for initiating environmental solutions, port modernisation, cold chain, skill development, innovation among other areas. In October 2017, PM Lofven participated in "Make in India: Sweden 2017" event organized in Stockholm.

Two documents were agreed to between India and Sweden following the delegation-level talks - Innovation Partnership and Joint Action Plan - to maximise bilateral cooperation for the benefit of the people.

The Nordic-India Summit was co-hosted by India and Sweden on the second day of Modi visit to Sweden. Prime Minister's discussions with PM Lofven focused on strengthening bilateral ties with special emphasis on building closer economic relations as well as important global and regional issues. "Sweden has been a partner for India in the field of defence and I hope that in future also, Sweden will help India in defence manufacturing", he said.

"The prime ministers noted that the unique strengths of India and the Nordic countries offer huge opportunities for trade and investment diversification and mutually beneficial collaboration", the Foreign Ministry noted.

According to the Joint Action Plan, both sides "reaffirmed the need for reform of the UN Security Council, including its expansion, to make it more representative, accountable, effective, and responsive to the realities of the 21st century".

Besides defence, the two countries have also made a decision to strengthen cooperation in security, with an emphasis on cyber security. "We have been closely cooperating on the global platform and this will continue".

The partnership covers several areas, including smart cities, transportation and eMobility, energy, clean technologies, new materials, space, circular and bio-based economy, and health and life sciences. PM Modi arrived in Sweden on April 16, 2018, where he was received by his Swedish counterpart Stefan Lofven at Arlanda Airport.

The joint statement said they will enhance Indo-Swedish dialogue on defence cooperation.

Modi's visit is the first by any Indian Prime Minister in the last 30 years. "The previous visits took place in 1957 and 1988".

Modi arrived late Tuesday in the United Kingdom and will embark upon a packed day of bilateral engagements with British Prime Minister Theresa May and the royal family today before going into formal multilateral discussions as part of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) later in the week.

On 20 April, the PM will fly to Germany where he will meet German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
