Pence NSA Pick Withdraws After Trump Tried to Block Him

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence receives a Venezuela's flag pin from Venezuelan opposition leader Antonio Ledezma during a meeting at the residence of the U.S. ambassador in Lima Peru Friday

The episode is an illustration of the fact that while President Trump may be incoherent on matters of policy and, at times, basic speech, he still retains the memory of a vengeful elephant.

The appointment of Mr Jon Lerner to Mr Pence's team was one of the more short-lived personnel moves in a White House known for turbulent staff turnover and infighting, and the first to envelope the vice-president, who works hard to stay out of the drama.

There had been hopes leading up to this weekend's summit that an agreement might be signed, but that did not happen and instead, US negotiators softened their demands on autos even as Trump said he will to renegotiate "forever".

The president sought to block Jon Lerner from entering the halls of the West Wing over what Trump viewed as past opposition to his candidacy, Axios reported Sunday.

"Why would Mike do that?"

Pence also said, 'It's time for Russian Federation to get the message President Trump delivered last night.

Pence said that the Trump administration considered every potential response in developing its plan for the Syrian strike and its monitoring the environment for any retaliation.

But just hours later, Lerner stepped down, or "stepped down".

"Tonight Jon informed the vice president that he was withdrawing from coming on board as national security adviser and the vice president accepted his decision", Alyssa Farah, Pence's press secretary, said in a statement. Lerner meant to continue working with Haley while advising the vice president, The Washington Post reported on Thursday.

But this is nearly certainly, at its heart, another story about the president's wafer-thin skin.
