Lewis Hamilton reveals the real reason he struggled in Chinese Grand Prix

F1 news featuring Daniel Ricciardo

Ricciardo's win was particularly impressive considering he was only able to get one practice lap in after suffering turbo failure on Friday, and faced a race against time for his auto to be functional in time for qualifying on Saturday. They're all pretty fun.

In order to allow the track marshalls to clean up the debris, the safety vehicle was deployed.

The Red Bull man was unsurprisingly handed a ten-second penalty but that was of absolutely no concern to team-mate Ricciardo as he found an impossible gap to take Bottas and the race lead.

And Ricciardo made full use of his extra grip, making sensational overtakes on Lewis Hamilton, Vettel and race leader Valtteri Bottas to move to the front, after Verstappen gave up fourth place to the Australian in a scrape with the defending champion.

Unlike their rivals, Ricciardo and Verstappen dived into the pits to take on fresh rubber, and the gamble worked for Ricciardo as he passed Kimi Raikkonen, Lewis Hamilton, Vettel and finally Bottas for a quite remarkable win.

"We didn't assume we went to escape only in qualifying and over twenty four hours later, now to be here.this game'so insane".

Kevin Magnussen finished in the points for the second straight week as he brought his Haas F1 vehicle home 10th a week after finishing fifth in Bahrain.

Hamilton leaves China second in the championship, and just nine points behind Vettel, but he wasn't happy after what he called "a disaster" of a weekend.

Verstappen and Ricciardo had carved their way to the top after an inspired gamble by Red Bull team principal Christian Horner to haul both of his drivers in for fresh tyres after Brendon Hartley and Pierre Gasly tangled and the safety vehicle was sent out.

Further down the field, Vettel was obviously suffering with a damaged auto, as Fernando Alonso squeezed past the German on lap 55 to take seventh place, with the Ferrari driver complaining of having been pushed off the track.

The victory came a week after Ricciardo retired from the race in Bahrain on the second lap with an engine failure.

"Twenty-four hours ago I thought we might be starting at the back of the grid".

"We are the second-or third-fastest team at the moment, so we have some improving to do, but that's not impossible". Every win I've had has been in a similar circumstance.

"That was unexpected", Ricciardo said of his victory. "It felt like we should have had the victory, but not today". I had no pace and was just trying to hold on for whatever I had. We have lost performance since Melbourne and maybe even more so this weekend.

Verstappen was having a relatively quiet race, until a safety vehicle on lap thirty-two offered him the opportunity to try an aggressive - and potentially lucrative - strategy.

"Sometimes you've just got to lick the stamp and send it", he added of the lunge on Hamilton for third place. "That is racing. These things happen".
