Canadian rugby sevens team to play for Commonwealth Games bronze

The Springbok Women Sevens at the traditional jersey hand-over in Hong Kong

Fiji, who won last week's Hong Kong sevens, were bidding for their first Commonwealth gold after taking silver behind New Zealand in the inaugural sevens in 1998 and again in 2002.

South Africa's Blitzboks, the defending Commonwealth Games champions, suffered a shock 21-14 defeat at the hands of England after trailing 14-0 at halftime in their bronze medal play-off on Sunday at the Gold Coast, Australia.

The victor of that match will progress through to the semi-finals and the loser will be out of medal contention.

A huge sigh of relief could be felt around the Robina Stadium when Charlotte Caslick broke clear to score the match-winning try for crowd favourites Australia and keep their hopes alive of completing a unique treble of the winning the first Rugby World Cup Sevens, Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games titles.

Another turn of pace from Celestine Masinde doubled Kenya's lead to 14-0 at the break, before South Africa came roaring back with tries from Mathrin Simmers and Zenay Jordaan.

Woodman, the highest ever women's Sevens try-scorer, was inconsolable following the gold medal match in Rio after she was sin-binned during her side's loss.

New Zealand even had an opportunity to put the game completely beyond doubt when Fiji's Sevuloni Mocenecagi was given a yellow card for an early tackle on Sam Dickson. An 80 metre try from Kelly Brazier secured the win and the first ever women's sevens gold medal. Two exceptional finals capped a superb tournament of firsts - the first women's competition and Jamaica and Zambia making their debuts in the men's event.

The women beat Wales 45-0 and also face New Zealand in the semi-finals.

With scores at 12-7 in favour of New Zealand late in the second half, but Australia's Ellia Green hit back one minute before the hooter to level the scores.
