Dozens Of People In Syria Were Killed In A Suspected Chemical Weapons Attack, Rescue Workers Say

The United States launched a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base previous year in response to a sarin gas attack in northwestern Syria blamed on Assad.

It came nearly exactly a year after a suspected gas attack killed at least 74 people in Khan Sheikhoun, Idlib province, prompting the U.S. to launch cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase.

Trump warned there would be a "big price to pay" and called Assad an "animal".

"Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria".

US President Donald Trump responded to the attack Sunday morning on Twitter.

A year ago, President Trump ordered an airstrike of an air base in Syria following another chemical attack in the rebel held northwestern town of Khan Sheikhoun, where at least 58 people died. "We are looking into the attack at this point", White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism adviser Thomas Bossert said. adding that the photos of the incident are "horrible".

Both the Syrian and Russian governments denied any involvement in the alleged chemical attack on Sunday.

Syria and its Russian ally denounced the claims as "fabrications", with Russia warning of potential "dire consequences" if they were used as a pretext for military action.

Commenting on the incidents, the European Union called for an global response to the attack.

"Such an attack on civilians, including children, is a grave violation of global humanitarian law".

France said it would work closely with the United States on a response to the suspected chemical attack.

United Nations war crimes investigators had previously documented 33 chemical attacks in Syria, attributing 27 to the Assad government, which has repeatedly denied using the weapons.

In recent years, the Syrian government has been accused of using chemical weapons as a tool against the armed opposition.

- OPCW establishes a fact-finding mission in response to persistent allegations of chemical weapon attacks in Syria, "to establish facts surrounding allegations of the use of toxic chemicals, reportedly chlorine, for hostile purposes in the Syrian Arab Republic".

A joint inquiry by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons found that the Syrian government was responsible. The Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu, addressing his ministry's chiefs, said on March 21 "the possibility of the use of chemical agents by militants persists with a view to accusing Syrian troops of using chemical weapons in the future. We call for immediate humanitarian access to victims, as well as an on-the-spot investigation", the ministry said.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said in February that Britain should consider joining military action against Assad's regime if there is fresh "incontrovertible" evidence he has used chemical weapons against his own people.

By now the pattern of these alleged chemical weapons attacks is set in stone.

Britain's foreign office called on for an global probe into the reports of a chemical attack in Douma. "These reports, if confirmed, are horrifying and demand an immediate response by the worldwide community".

What other major chemical attacks? .

The ministry said the allegations have been planned beforehand to prolong the lives of the "terrorists" in Douma.
