Zuckerberg denies knowledge of Facebook shadow profiles

Mark Zuckerberg’s Ex Speechwriter Is Calling BS On His Claims Of Ignorance

Ever since the Cambridge Analytica scandal became public knowledge, forcing chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg and chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg to apologize, Facebook has been making changes to the way it allows third-party apps to access data.

Everson also said that during the past month, Facebook users have not updated their account privacy settings amid a series of recent crises for the company that led to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg attending two congressional hearings in Washington, D.C. this week. So while only 270,000 users took the quiz, by Facebook's latest estimate, the app was able to harvest data of at least 87 million users.

Earlier in the day, Zuckerberg said he believes it is "inevitable" that there will be regulation of his industry.

Amid rising calls for legislation to better protect the data that social media and other Internet companies siphon off from users, Zuckerberg said he accepted that legal restrictions of some sort were in the cards - while adding a word of caution. "In the USA obviously we're very focused on election interference, and in the United Kingdom they've been focused on that as well with Brexit", he told Recode. "A lot of times regulations put in place rules that a company that is larger, that has resources like ours, can easily comply with, but that might be more hard for a smaller startup company".

Additionally, in defense of general user data concerns, Facebook has also provided a way to identify which apps and websites you have authorized by way of Facebook login. Facebook has since been under pressure to increase transparency around the treatment of users' data.

"Most of what I found was not at all surprising", he said. Facebook knows a fair amount about you.

Lujan: Facebook has detailed profiles on people who have never signed up for Facebook, yes or no?

"Facebook chooses what I see in my newsfeed based on what they think is most relevant to me upon observing my use of the platform and how I interact with my friends and other pages".

"Facebook tells you how your information will be used", said Fraser, a lawyer and partner with McInnes Cooper.

"We need to care about privacy if you care about a free and democratic society and participation in it", she said. "And [it's] why Facebook is such a special service that people feel a lot of ownership over". Zuckerberg said he will know more when the current investigation is over.

Reading from his written testimony, Mr Zuckerberg repeated a statement he had previously made, saying the misuse of data "was my mistake, and I'm sorry".

"I think there is some cause for concern but rest assured that the USA will not allow Facebook to fail for the simple reason that Facebook is one of their success stories".

Frederike Kaltheuner from Privacy International tells Tech Tent that this kind of data collection, with users unaware of what is happening, is all too common - and Facebook is far from the only culprit.
