Full text of the Supreme Court order in Nawaz Sharif's lifetime disqualification

NAB alleges the road was constructed in connivance with Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif for his personal benefit in 1998

Pakistan's Supreme Court has disqualified former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, dismissed from his post over corruption allegations past year, from holding public office for life.

Justice Umar Ata Bandyal read out the 60-page verdict of the five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, in cases involving interpretation and determination of the question of temporary or permanent bar from contesting elections.

Last month, Nawaz's brother Shahbaz Sharif formally took charge of the PML-N after an earlier court ruling banned the former premier from heading the party.

The court had grappled with Article 62 (1)(f) which only stated that a lawmaker is disqualified under specified conditions but did not set out the duration of the disqualification.

The top court's 5-member panel made the judgement after its July decision that ousted Sharif didn't disclose the length of time the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz was barred from office.

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) hailed the ruling against Sharif.

However, the only real way to bring Nawaz Sharif back to office is if "they come into power through the election and amend the constitution", said former Justice Shaiq Usmani. "The prime minister was elected by the people", she said, referring to Sharif.

For Sharif's supporters, they see the Supreme Court as acting in tandem with the army to ensure that he can not re-emerge in Pakistan's politics. Such a person can not contest elections or become a member of parliament. "Nawaz Sharif has been caught in his own trap as he himself had supported Article 62", Khurshed Shah, leader of the Opposition in National Assembly, told media after the Supreme Court decision.

Speaking to reporters after the ruling, Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb from the ruling party called the judgment a "joke".

Nawaz asked party members to observe patience and wait for the party's call as such decisions can not waiver PML-N's mission of serving the people.
