Saudi air defence forces intercept missile over Najran - statement

Arab News to become first Saudi ‘gender-balanced’ newspaper by 2020

Saudi state media said air defence forces had intercepted a missile over the capital. Videos that have emerged on Twitter also show clouds of smoke in the sky, where the missile was allegedly intercepted.

As the announcement on the missile interceptions emerged, Malki also said in a separate statement that Saudi air defenses had shot down two unmanned Yemeni drones Wednesday in southern Saudi Arabia.

Yemen's Houthi rebels later claimed responsibility for the incident saying they had targeted Saudi Arabia's defence ministry in Riyadh with ballistic missiles.

The group unveiled what it said was a series of drones, including the Qasef-1, at a ceremony past year. Tehran and the Houthis have repeatedly denied the allegations.

"The air force announced the execution of air strikes with the Qasef-1 aircraft on Aramco in Jizan (province)", the channel said on its Twitter account, referring to a drone the Houthis unveiled a year ago.

Despite its relatively simple technology, the Qasif-1 carries a 30kg warhead and has allowed the Houthis to target vessels in the strategic Bab Al Mandeb Strait.

The missiles were directed towards the capital Riyadh and cities of Jizan and Najran.

The Arab coalition to support legitimacy in Yemen accused the Houthis and Iran of violating International Humanitarian Law.

Primarily based on a United Nations report, larger than 9,245 people have been killed in Yemen since March 2015, larger than half of which had been civilians.

In retaliation, the Houthis have launched dozens of missiles at the kingdom.
