Malcolm Turnbull facing embarrassment after failing to meet his own popularity benchmark

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

'If you truly believe [the Newspoll] is exactly the sentiment of the people, then you also have an obligation not to drive your party, or the government, off a cliff, ' he told Sky News.

Mr Turnbull, who noted the Abbott government had lost 30 Newspolls when he took the leadership in 2015, will be in Sydney on Monday to face inevitable questions about his leadership.

Since his election, critics across the political spectrum have frequently cited the failure to end the insider-driven gamesmanship of Canberra, the capital, and the lack of clear leadership from Mr. Turnbull and his party.

Liberal senator and Abbott supporter Eric Abetz said he was "not aware of any move" against Turnbull's leadership on the day of the prime minister's 30 Newspoll loss, but repeated his calls for government investment in coal-fired power to win back the support of voters.

"It's not unusual for incumbent governments in between elections being behind in the polls, I mean we're not actually that far behind, truth be told", he told ABC radio. "I think the other 148, if they were being honest, would tell you that if the opportunity came their way they'd be interested as well".

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said the prime minister had the support of the party room.

'It is clear that the people have made up their mind about Mr Abbott's leadership'.

The former PM had previously said Mr Turnbull should be expected to explain why the benchmark set for Mr Abbott should not also apply to himself.

Its energy and climate change policy is a "disaster", she added, and there has been a "big fail" on NBN.

Malcolm Turnbull has acknowledged, without mentioning Mr Abbott, disruptions in the party were causing issues but said he was focused on winning the election due in the second half of next year.

She said that under the Turnbull government, billions of dollars have been cut from schools, universities, vocational education and hospitals while 100,000 pensioners have lost or are having their pension reduced.

The impact of the poll was to have been within the Liberal Party. The next Newspoll is out on April 8.Three sitting Australian prime ministers have been ousted by their own parties since 2010, dumped by their colleagues nearly as soon as their popularity began to wane.

Malcolm Turnbull is now officially as awful as Tony Abbott was when he lost his job.

On Monday, Mr Abbott will ride through the Latrobe Valley, including past the mothballed Hazelwood power station, and will meet workers and electricity companies as part of his pro-coal push.

"In 87 Newspolls I fell behind once".

"We have lost 30 Newspolls in a row. Both MT&BS [Malcolm Turnbull and Bill Shorten] would be long gone if we applied that standard now".
