Donald Trump seethes over Federal Bureau of Investigation raid, ponders firing Rosenstein, Mueller

Michael Cohen

On Tuesday afternoon, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the White House press secretary, suggested that Trump had the power to get rid of Mueller without going through the Justice Department.

But he lashed out at the "never ending and corrupt Russia Investigation, which takes tremendous time and focus. And I thanked them at the conclusion", Cohen told CNN.

Trump slammed the move as a "disgraceful situation" and "an attack on our country", reports CNN. The raid of his office was overseen by the U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan and based in part on a referral from Mueller.

For federal agents to have searched Cohen's apartment, office, and hotel room, prosecutors must have convinced a judge that a raid was necessary to obtain evidence of a crime that Cohen might have attempted to hide or destroy if he was issued a subpoena.

The Monday raids included the Loew's Regency hotel where Cohen has been staying.

The FBI was also looking for evidence that Cohen tried to suppress damaging information about Trump during the 2o16 campaign, the Times reported.

"I believe it will soon be shown everything I did was legal", added Cohen. Instead, FBI agents working for the USA attorney's office for the Southern District of NY carried out the operation after apparently getting a referral from Mueller. But before these claims, the president had painted a very different picture.

Cohen's decision to speak with CNN anchor Don Lemon after the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his office triggered Avenatti's flurry of insults, as Trump's beleaguered lawyer attempts to recover from his week filled with bad PR. The White House cited a need to remain in the United States to monitor the US response to a suspected chemical attack in Syria.

Stephen Ryan, an attorney for Cohen, has called the Monday raids "inappropriate and unnecessary", saying Cohen has cooperated completely with all government entities investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election.

Some GOP senators made clear they didn't share the President's view. And then you have to make sure - there's a number of guidelines within that the Justice Department has, but one of them is that the search warrant has to be written as narrowly as possible so that you make sure that you're not gaining more evidence than you need. John Cornyn of Texas warned of "serious repercussions" if Mueller were dismissed.

Trump has absorbed some advice from a number of legal commentators on cable news, including Alan Dershowitz, a retired Harvard Law School professor who has made supportive comments about the president.

"The tooled up to execute such raids, whereas the special counsel's office sitting in D.C. would face logistical challenges in trying to do it themselves", Katyal said. FBI Director Chris Wray is a Trump-appointed Republican.

We wonder: Will Cohen be fired next? After all, the hard-charging lawyer is virtually family to the President and, as his personal fixer for over a decade, is in a position to know his most private business. The best-case scenario for him at this point is that (a) the payment to Daniels is somehow deemed not to have been a campaign contribution even though Cohen didn't think to get her to sign an NDA about a five-year-old affair until three weeks before the 2016 election, and (b) it turns out that Cohen really did sign the hush-money agreement on Trump's behalf, as his lawyer, but never told Trump the details, which would merely be a major ethical breach instead of a criminal violation.

"Speaking to CNN in his first public comments since the raid, the attorney said "[he] would be lying" if he said he wasn't anxious about the search, which is reportedly related to payments made to two women who claim to have had affairs with Trump.
