Barcelona star Lionel Messi leaves Gerard Pique angry after Champions League exit

Lionel Messi and Barcelona could await Liverpool in the final four

On a night otherwise filled with despair, there was one small glimmer of a silver lining for Barcelona, as Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta became the first two players to play 100 Champions League games together.

'It was a very big disappointment for the season we have had so far'.

Considering they thumped AS Roma 4-1 last week, it seemed inevitable Barcelona would secure their place in the Champions League semi-finals on Wednesday night.

Barcelona surrendered a 4-1 first leg advantage to lose 3-0 in Rome and crash out on away goals, but as well as blaming Valverde's tactics, fingers were pointed at an off-colour Messi.

Goals from Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas helped secure a historic 3-0 win for the Serie A side.

"They were very clear about how to attack us and we didn't find the solution".

"The Europa League is important to us, everyone knows that".

"It came at the ideal time for us".

"I would be lying if I said we could use this as a learning experience because past year we went out in a similar way", added Busquets.

"The coach is the one who has to take responsibility", he added. "So I am absolutely responsible for everything".

"It's hard to accept this elimination because we had a lot of hope for this season and once again it (the Champions League) has escaped us", the midfielder added.

Ernesto Valverde's side then travel to Celta Vigo in midweek as they look to wrap up the title, and play Sevilla in the Copa del Rey final on April 21. We have to try and win them because we have not won anything yet. "It's hard to take this elimination because we had a lot of hope and it has escaped".

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu, meanwhile, admitted that Roma deserved to progress, apologising to the club's supporters in the process. "I feel bad for the fans". "We played perfectly and performed right from the start to the last minute".
