Notably, all the affected videos came from Vevo accounts on YouTube.
The recently hacked music videos on YouTube were restored after a cyber attack on the popular video streaming service today. Many of their videos are still available on the platform, but they come with a defaced title and a thumbnail image. The video's description was also altered, with the hackers, who call themselves Prosox and Kuroi'sh, writing "Free Palestine". It had five billion views at the time of the hacking and was pulled off the site during the hack.
"Vevo can confirm that a number of videos in its catalog were subject to a security breach today, which has now been contained".
A Twitter account that seems to belong to one of the hackers claims the pair used a script to change the titles, adding "Don't judge me I love YouTube". It's also not clear if the hackers have gained access to the individual accounts or if there has been a widespread exploit with the Vevo accounts.
A spokesperson for YouTube issued the following statement: "After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue". Vevo further stated that "We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalogue to be restored to full working order". The Independent believes the hackers could only change the names and thumbnails of videos, rather than delete them.
A user appearing to be Prosox commented on the hack on Twitter.
Vevo is the only company still profiting only music videos in 2018.
