Oklahoma Republicans refuse to bow to teachers' demands

Morning Bell: TEACHER WALKOUT - DAY 3

Authorities say she also told police she had picked up a group of students, including the victim, to travel to the State Capitol to attend the teacher walkout rally.

In April, lawmakers raised salaries for teachers by an average of $6,100, increased pay for support staff by $1,250, and added $50 million in funding for schools.

Norman teacher Jordan Nguyen pets Milo, a therapy dog who is a staple in her music classroom in Norman, Okla., as protests continue over school funding, April 9, 2018, in Oklahoma City.

A San Antonio educator is keeping tabs on the teacher walkouts in her former state of Oklahoma.

They say Governor Mary Fallin must use a veto to reinstate the motel tax the Senate just repealed and they want lawmakers to end some exemptions on capital gains taxes. With demands for statewide strikes spreading from Kentucky, Arizona and SC to Florida, Iowa and Texas, the unions have warned teachers that strikes are illegal and would lead to "harsh consequences". Before that, Oklahoma teachers had not received a raise in a decade. On Sunday, Washington Post business columnist Robert Samuelson said wages and funding were only the superficial causes of the teachers' strikes.

They are also determining how many days they'd be willing to support a teacher walkout. That ignited protests in other Republican-led states, including Kentucky and Arizona. "We are ready to fight for our kids for the long haul".

The marchers are mostly women, and they have formed a tight bond.

"We aren't going to shut up, we aren't done, this movement has gelled us together", Madeline Jacobsen, a third-grade teacher from Tulsa, told the Guardian.

"This year's education budget, which spends $2.9 billion (a 22 percent increase), has been signed into law".

"My former students who are now teachers, one is leading a walk today, another is on the capitol grounds", said Carbbe. Sulphur schools said they will remain closed until at least Thursday. Supporters of the bill said the changes are necessary to save the state's pension systems.

"We are doing this because there are better ways to fund our core functions of government instead of continually raising taxes", Dahm said.

But the strike continued, with educators calling for a $10,000 pay increase over three years.
