Cicilline: Trump firing of Mueller would 'obstruct justice'

Trump condems the FBI raid on Cohen’s office as “disgraceful.”

United States president Donald Trump is considering firing Robert Mueller, the Federal Bureau of Investigation special counsel investigating Russian interference into the 2016 presidential election.

The raid on Cohen's office was conducted by the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan and was based at least partly on a referral from Mueller, according to Cohen's lawyer, Stephen Ryan.

Trump's comments fueled speculation that he will try to fire Mueller, something the president had been avoiding talking about publicly.

The New York Times wrote Monday evening that Mueller's team is investigating the circumstances around the payment, which came after Trump addressed a September 2015 conference via satellite and answered questions for 20 minutes. We'll see what happens, but I think it's really a sad situation ...

And then the president seemed to go on to attack those carrying out the Russian Federation investigation, calling them "the most biased group of people" with "the biggest conflicts of interest I've ever seen".

The president also called Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators 'the most conflicted group of people I have ever seen'.

The New York Times first reported that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seized several documents including some related to the $130,000 payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.

Trump also criticized Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation: "H$3 e made what I consider to be a very awful mistake for the country".

Trump cannot technically fire Mueller, but could ask the deputy attorney general to do so on his behalf.

However, his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, is said to have called Schoen the next day to ask for a $150,000 fee from Pinchuk in exchange for the talk.

Last June, Trump tried to order Mueller's termination, but backed off after White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign.

He added it marked a "whole new level of unfairness" by Mueller and his team. Meanwhile, the special counsel's heightened focus on Cohen comes after he subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents and records related to its foreign deals.

The searches were executed by FBI agents after special counsel Robert Mueller referred the case to NY federal prosecutors, according to Stephen Ryan, Cohen's lawyer.

Michael Cohen, U.S. President Donald Trump's personal attorney, began the week as an embattled fixer who had paid adult film star Stormy Daniels to keep silent about her claims of having had sex with Trump more than a decade ago. "It resulted within the pointless seizure of protected legal professional consumer communications between a lawyer and his shoppers".

Trump then argued that no one was looking at the supposed "crimes" committed by Hillary Clinton. Mueller is already examining Russian collusion in the 2016 election and possible obstruction of justice by Trump. Some lawmakers say terminating Mueller could lead to a constitutional crisis.

Mueller brought information involving Cohen to Rosenstein, who decided that the inquiry should be handled by federal prosecutors in NY, according to a person familiar with the situation.

There have been few indicators that Mueller was excited by investigating the fee, although.
