Border states pledge 1600 troops for President Trump's border fight

Arizona sending 225 troops to Mexico border, more heading soon

Gov. Doug Ducey suggested a gaggle of troopers making able to deploy from a Phoenix military base Monday that their "mission is about providing manpower and belongings" to assist companies on the border and denied that there was a political motive.

The Arizona National Guard has announced the deployment of 338 members. Fred Davis, a rancher who lives and works 25 miles from the border, said his community has been "screaming for somebody to do something for 30 years" and is in full support of Trump and Ducey.

The Arivaca area rancher says that in recent months she's seen an increase in the number of undocumented immigrants coming across her land.

The original announcement that Arizona troops would be deployed came after Texas announced on Friday it would send 250 National Guard troops to its border with Mexico.

Abbott says there's no fixed date on their deployment and that "we may be in this for the long haul".

Texas agencies posted images over the weekend of Guard members arriving at the border.

He also said he doesn't think the border is a partisan issue. He supports the deployment but is concerned Guardsmen will militarize the border.

The troops will not have law enforcement powers but will only provide support.

Administration officers have talked about that rising numbers of people being caught on the southern border, whereas in keeping with seasonal traits now, require an instantaneous response.

President Trump has said he wants to use the military at the border until progress is made on his proposed border wall, which has mostly stalled in Congress.

Defense Secretary James Mattis last Friday approved paying for up to 4,000 National Guard personnel from the Pentagon budget through September.

But critics, including Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Arizona, said a military deployment was more likely to "do irreversible damage" than improve the situation on the border.

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's office said that more than 80 troops would deploy later this week.

In California, Brown's spokesman, Evan Westrup, said Monday that state officials are still reviewing Trump's troop request. Yet, he acknowledged that the Bush and Obama administrations deployed far more National Guard soldiers, all with the same goal: To provide support for U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Those duties will include "air support, reconnaissance support, operational support, construction of border infrastructure, and logistical support".

"You know, you don't want to say to people that are trafficking drugs and human beings across the border how long you're going to be there and show them a timetable", Ducey said.

The Republican Ducey in a tweet Monday said more of the state's Guard members will be deployed on Tuesday.
