Poacher Salman Khan gets bail

Salman Khan gets bail in blackbuck poaching case

A court on Saturday granted bail to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who will be allowed to remain free while he appeals his conviction on charges of poaching rare deer in a wildlife preserve two decades ago.

The 52-year-old was sentenced to five years in prison on Thursday after being convicted of killing two blackbucks in 1998.

Judge Ravindra Kumar Joshi, who began hearing his bail request this morning for the second day, announced his decision just after lunch. But Salman's lawyers insisted the PM report was based on the bones of the animal and the skin, which is very crucial in such tests, was not examined.

Salman's case was presented in the session's court on Friday by senior advocate Mahesh Bora, who came with a 51-page bail application. Two personal bonds of Rs 25,000 each will be furnished to facilitate the release of Salman Khan.

The Indian antelope, also known as chinkaras, is an endangered species and revered by residents of Rajasthan.

Khan has been convicted under Section 9 of the Act, which prohibits hunting of wild animals.

Soli Sorabjee, a legal expert, said it was normal for bail to be granted in such a case, and didn't see Khan getting any special treatment from the court.

It said the high court had also raised suspicion over the recovery of a Gypsy auto, pellets and arms from the actor in the two other poaching cases against him.

Khan has denied the allegations throughout, with his lawyers arguing the blackbucks died of natural causes such as overeating, and that there was no evidence to suggest they had been shot.

Director of Salman's upcoming film Race 3 Remo D'Souza told PTI, "I am happy that he has got bail". Veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha who is a close friend of the Khan family spent Thursday evening with Salman's father Salim Khan and his daughter and actor Sonakshi Sinha was also there with them.

The film's producer Ramesh Taurani said, "For us, Salman coming out was very important".

Salman Khan, the man who has one of the biggest fan following in the country, the man who gave Indian cinema the ideal depiction of a cop, a criminal, a lover and a vigilante all in one.

"The accused is a popular actor whose deeds are followed by people. Welcome brother Salman Khan".
