People already want Theresa May to stop the sugar tax

In the United Kingdom from today entered into force a tax on sugar in soft drinks, news agencies reported citing the website of the British Treasury.

The UK's tax on sugar-sweetened drinks comes into effect today more than two years after it was first announced.

Ireland's sugar tax is earmarked for May 1. Professor Nava Ashraf, from the London School of Economics, is a leader in the field of behavioural economics.

Jenvrik also confirmed that the government is already looking to sugary milk-based drinks, like milkshakes, and may start taxing them if companies don't match targets and cut their sugar content by a fifth before 2020.

The global report found they are actually helping the poor, with most of the tax revenues coming from higher income households. Drinks with 5g per 100ml will go up by 18p a litre - if the manufacturers pass the tax to shoppers.

Earlier this year, in an effort to improve the diet of its citizens, the Norwegian government increased the current tax on chocolate, candies and soft drinks by as much as 83 percent.

The Australian Medical Association has urged the government to introduce a tax "as a matter of priority" to cut down on consumption levels.

For drinks with a sugar content of 8g or more per 100ml - a sugar content of 8% or above - the tax adds 24p per litre to the cost.

People in the United Kingdom will be paying more for their sugary drinks as a so-called sugar tax comes into effect. This could also increase their prices in pubs and restaurants too.

"I think that is a matter for parents to decide for themselves and the tax system should be there to raise the venue the country needs to pay its way". Lastly, an expected revenue of £240m ($340) is expected to be raked by the government - that money will be invested in schools sports and breakfast clubs.

Leading brands such as Irn-Bru, Fanta and Lucozade have already reduced the sugar content of their drinks.

Sugar-free drinks such as Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero will be exempt from the levy.

'As that has happened, obesity rates have continued to rise'. Similarly, he mentioned that the government would consider implementing a similar tax on candies and chocolate, if they felt it was a necessary step towards encouraging healthier recipes.

FactCheck's analysis of data from the NCDRisC project shows that in four countries which have had a sugary drinks tax in recent years (Mexico, France, Denmark and Hungary), average BMI (body mass index) and obesity prevalence increased or remained static, year-on-year, from 2008 to 2014.
