Uganda Mourns 4 UPDF Soldiers Killed By Al Shabaab in Somalia

A military boot is seen at the scene of a suicide car bomb attack by al Shabaab in Somalia's capital Mogadishu

The U.S. has carried out more than a dozen drone strikes against al-Shabab since past year, after the Trump administration approved expanded military efforts against the extremist group.

Abdi Dahir Gure, Bula-burte District Commissioner, confirmed the incident, saying a father and mother including their four children were among those killed in the latest landmine attack by al-Shabab militants.

The group launches regular attacks on government, military and civilian targets.

Militants from the al-Shabab group, linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist organization (outlawed in Russia), have killed four local officials in the city of Mogadishu, the Xinhua news agency reported.

Speaking to Al Jazeera on Sunday, he said the group only lost 14 fighters and killed over 50 African Union soldiers.

Instead, the army spokesperson, Brig Richard Karemire, countered that the al-Shabaab must be regretting why they blundered into attacking the Ugandan bases because they suffered heavy casualties. "They were repulsed, but all these attacks were to stop reinforcement".

The militants initially detonated two suicide auto bombs that hit one AU vehicle and one Somali military vehicle, Somali army major Farah Osman, who is stationed near the AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) base, said.

A large number of al-Shabab militants then began shooting from under the trees, according to a Somali army officer stationed near the AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) base. "Our fighters also attacked five other bases", Mus'ab said.

"It was a hellish battle", Major Farah Osman said.

Nur, the government official, said no soldiers from the Somali army were killed and was not sure if any AMISOM troops were killed.
