Google is killing off its URL shortener - here are the best alternatives

Google Ending URL Shortener Support In Favor Of Dynamic Links

For those unaware, goo.gl is a URL shortening service offered by Google that was introduced in December 2009 and initially used for Google Toolbar and Feedburner before going public in September 2010. After that, 30 March 2019 will see the console discontinued, preventing people from managing their short links.

Google recommends Firebase Dynamic Links or services such as Bitly and Ow.ly as an alternative for creating new short links.

Instead of goo.gl will use Firebase Dynamic Links. After that time, shortened links will continue to redirect to their destinations, but won't be migrated over to the new Firebase console.

On Friday, software engineer Michael Hermanto announced via the Google Developers blog that Google is shutting down goo.gl in the coming weeks. You cannot only shorten links but also redirect users to any location within a web page or smartphone app (both Android and iOS). Starting April 13, 2018, FDLs, which are essentially smart URLs will replace Google's goo.gl.

Anyway, those who would like to try this doomed URL shortener in the months left until it goes to the far beyond should take a look at the brief video tutorial below. He noted that the move has to do with the company's decision to refocus its efforts as it transitions to another service that will fill the void.

Google's URL shortening service worked similarly to others; users could paste any URL into a form on the Google URL Shortener website to turn it into a shorter URL that was easier to share or publish. This is the option the company suggests developers use if they want to create short links within apps. Don't worry though, existing shortened links will continue to work.
