Sea of Thieves Update Notes Released, Pre-Order Item Issues Fixed

Sea Of Thieves: World Map For Animal Spawns, Forts And Outposts Location

If you've been checking out Sea of Thieves through Xbox's subscription service then you might be facing some bad news right now.

In a recent post on the Sea of Thieves website, Rare advised players that in a future update players would be charged gold for deaths.

Sea of Thieves is now available on Xbox One and PC.

Originally, there were plans for the Captain of the Ferry to deduct a small gold fee if the player died during quests. "Rates are dependant on the cause of death, so the more avoidable the death, the less patience the Captain will have when we enable this feature!"

The response by players in a 19-page thread accompanying the announcement was nearly universally negative. Though Rare later updated the forum post to say that it never meant to charge players gold for dying in player-vs-player combat, the reaction to this feature was already in the books as negative. Many players anxious this kind of additional cost would just encourage griefers to stalk other players, killing them over and over and making it almost impossible to accumulate in-game gold.

"Normally I'm up for being careful and having a punishment for death, but I just don't think this is the game for it." another player explained.

Gathering feedback after the initial announcement, Rare has backtracked its intention of introducing a death tax in the just-released Sea of Thieves, which was planned for some future update of the always online pirate game. "Thanks for the honest feedback & discussion on this".

"I think we want to use a separate update to really talk to that [player feedback]", said Neate.
