Authorities give more details on Iowa family's death in Mexico

The water heater "was leaking gas, maybe from use or lack of maintenance", Pech said, according to The Associated Press.

The relatives made a decision to wait for the last flight from Cancun to St. Louis to arrive on Thursday in case the Sharps had just planned to stay an extra day, Weland told ABC News. She couldn't be sure if it was a staffer at the rental performing a requested wellness check or Mexican authorities who eventually found the Sharps, after the family filed a missing persons report at the Creston police precinct.

Kevin and Amy Sharp, along with their 12-year-old son Wayne and seven-year-old daughter Adriana died in Mexico.

The Sharps' family members chose to wait for the last flight from Cancun to St. Louis to arrive on Thursday in case the Sharps had just planned to stay an extra day, Weland told ABC News. A representative from the US State Department went to check on the Sharp family after they were reported missing.

Relatives say they've received overwhelming support on both sides of the border.

"They just thought it was the best place in the world to be", Fry said Monday. "Even the funeral home in Mexico has been good at helping".

Prosecutors for Quintana Roo state said pathologists determined that the members of the Sharp family of Creston, Iowa, had probably been dead for 36 to 48 hours before their discovery Friday.

They had been expected to leave Mexico on Wednesday to fly to the United States.

The Creston News Advertiser newspaper in Iowa reported that the family flew to Cancun on March 14.

The family let the unit on VRBO, a popular Vacation rental website.

"There were third parties trying to contact the place" once the social media post went viral, Peterson said.

There was no sign of violence where the family were found. The phone had not moved from its location since Thursday morning.

Paulina Chávez Alonzo, a spokeswoman for the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., told NBC News that the government offered its "deepest condolences to the family and friends of the Sharps". A member of Rocky Point Baptist Church for many years, she had a heart of gold and was always willing to help anyone.

Family members described Adrianna as the "fashion stylist" who "ruled that family".

"Everything they did, they did as a family", Harris told CNN.

In addition to running his beer distributing business, Kevin Sharp also raced stock cars.

"Creston is close-knit like all small towns in Iowa", Baldwin added. "He's a big part of that community there". "The more I think about him and the family, the harder it is". Bob Harris, an announcer at Iowa's Adams County Speedway, spoke highly of the Sharps.

"I can tell you one thing about Kevin Sharp: he was a family man".

The family issued an update on this story Friday afternoon.

"One way or another, we will".
