Qantas Airways Launches Non-Stop Flight From Perth To London

Reports Suggest Qantas Will Cut Jobs And Sell Melbourne Terminal

The Boeing 787-9 landed just after 5 in the afternoon, after covering 14,525km to arrive about 15 minutes early.

It is the second longest route in operation in the world after a 14,529km trip from Doha, Qatar, to Auckland, New Zealand, run by Qatar Airways.

Captained by Lisa Norman, was the longest Boeing Dreamliner flight in the world.

Qantas plans to introduce non-stop flights from Australia's east coast to Britain in the next few years.

"This is a truly historic flight that opens up a new era of travel".

The airline said the inaugural flight reduced total travel time by cutting out stopovers and by taking advantage of favorable winds on any given day without having to factor in a midpoint in the Middle East or Asia when choosing a flight path.

The maiden flight of a new nonstop regular passenger service between Australia and Britain has touched down at London's Heathrow Airport. "For the first time, Australia and Europe have a direct air link", says Qantas Group chief executive Alan Joyce, who was on board the flight (pictured below).

The firm hopes to routinely fly non-stop from Australia to London and NY by 2022, which would take 20 hours.

Mr Joyce added: "I'd like to specially recognise the support and cooperation of the Federal Government, the West Australian Government and Perth Airport".

Some passengers wore wear special monitors and devices so researchers from the University of Sydney could collect data on their sleeping and activity patterns, mental state, eating patterns and hydration before, during and after their long flight, Sydney's Daily Telegraph reported.

Australia hopes the direct routes will boost tourism.

But Singapore Airlines has provided the world's longest flight, travelling more than 15,300km from Singapore to NY on a direct route that was discontinued in 2013. But the airline plans to restart flights on the route, using the ultra-long range version of the Airbus A350.
