Thomas Mueller Bails World Champions Germany Out Against Spain

Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso keen to prove himself in maiden Spain call-up

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has paid tribute to his players following Friday's 1-1 draw with Germany in Dusseldorf.

Rodrigo Moreno put Spain ahead after just six minutes in Duesseldorf, but hosts Germany levelled when Thomas Mueller hit a superb equaliser in his 90th worldwide.

The 33-year-old outplayed Germany midfielders Sami Khedira and Toni Kroos by producing countless silky passes at the heart of Spain's attack.

The defending champions begin to finetune their World Cup preparations with high-profile home friendlies against Spain, in Duesseldorf, and Brazil, in Berlin next Tuesday.

"It was a very, very good test for both teams".

"We can learn a lot from tonight, that's why we wanted to play against teams like Spain and Brazil".

Brazil play Germany in the next match while Russian Federation meet France.

Mueller spotted Spain goalkeeper David de Gea off his line and unleashed a superb strike which hit the top left-hand corner from 20 yards out.

Right at the start of the second half, Germany winger Julian Draxler came within a whisker of putting the hosts ahead.

The hosts continued to pose the greater goalscorer threat, however, and Werner went close again before Hummels sent a 65th-minute header crashing against the crossbar from Kroos' cross.

Joao Miranda scored the opener in the 53rd minute, while Phillipe Coutinho made it 2-0 from the spot. The quality of the game was exquisite, the only disappointing part was that there wasn't enough goals for both the teams.

A flurry of substitutions interrupted the flow of the match in the second half but Spain still had sights of goal with a stretching David Silva finding the side netting from a Marco Asensio cross before Diego Costa had a good chance blocked.

"I'm happy with the performance of the whole team, although there were things that were more positive than others in the match".

With Manuel Neuer still out injured, Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen starts in goal for Germany as Low names a strong side.

"I am sure that in a World Cup match it would be different, but neither of us has taken the game as a friendly, but with rigour and ambition".
