Amazon considers buying some Toys 'R' Us stores

Toys R Us Riverside Retail Park Nottingham

Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy a year ago, and it announced last week that it expects to close all of its 735 stores in the US.

In addition, NPD data shows that 70% of sales through Toys "R" Us were for an occasion like a birthday (23%) or Christmas (34%), and that almost 70% of toys purchased at Toys "R" Us were chosen because kids asked for that specific product or brand.

The liquidation sale at Toys R Us in New Springville begins on Thursday, according to a store employee. "That's a big, big void that we're hoping to fill up".

"My assumption is that there's about half a billion dollars worth of toys that have been produced for Toys "R" Us with no place to go", Strategic Marks president Ellia Kassoff told CNNMoney.

Kassoff said he's been in contact with Hasbro Inc. The teen jewelry and accessories giant Claire's is another retail giant that has succumbed to financial troubles, declaring bankruptcy and announcing the closure of over 90 stores around the country.

Kassoff said in a post on Linkedin that if the pop-up stores perform well, it's possible some locations could stay open permanently. The company has not said when the location's final day would be. However, Toys "R" Us' decision to close its doors inspired him to follow the pop-up idea.

Toys "R" Us fate mirrors that of KB Toy Stores, as both franchises were purchased by Bain Capital and other venture capitalists before being saddled with insurmountable debt which hastened their decline.

So what can credit unions and banks learn from Toys R Us?
