Pak calls back envoy for 'consultations' over treatment of mission staff

An Indian vehicle reportedly intercepted a Pakistani diplomat's car in Indian capital New Delhi

"Our High Commission also shared photographs identifying the individuals, who forcibly halted and took pictures of the officers, with the Indian External Affairs Ministry", he said.

"We raised these issues in good faith through diplomatic channels and not through the media". We would like our missions to function normally, without any obstruction or harassment in keeping with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, " the spokesperson added. This happened even after a repeated request by India to Pakistan that the two countries ensure a safe working environment for their respective High Commissions. He has been called for consultation.

In his weekly press briefing, Muhammad Faisal alleged that the Indian government failed to take notice of the increasing incidents of intimidation of Pakistani diplomats, their families and staffers by its intelligence agencies.

The MEA added: "As you know, our high commission is facing a litany of issues which have not been resolved for several months".

While Pakistan some days ago issued a "foreign policy" to India saying it was becoming hard for its diplomats to function in Delhi, sources here said the present round of antagonism was initiated by an ISI raid on a residential complex under construction for Indian diplomats in Islamabad.

Dr Faisal claimed that political parties in Pakistan did not use anti-India sentiment during their election campaigns and urged Indian politicians to follow suit.

The protest came after Pakistan's High Commission released a video taken by one of their embassy officials that appeared to show their diplomatic auto being tailed by men on motorcycles while a vehicle in front blocked their way.

Pakistan had issued a note verbale recently to India on the matter, while India had issued a note verbale to Pakistan on Saturday.

Earlier in the day, Pakistani Foreign Office spokesperson Mohammad Faisal told the media in Islamabad that the government would hold consultations with its envoy in New Delhi over "recent incidents of harassing of their diplomats".

Mahmood had on Wednesday said that "current approach and methods" only go against the diplomatic efforts to make progress, and a "rethink" is needed in the current circumstances.
