South Africa v Australia: Kagiso Rabada banned for rest of series

Aus vs SA 2nd Test: AB de Villiers stellar knock puts Proteas in command

South Africa's six-wicket victory in the second Test at Port Elizabeth means that this series is destined to go to the wire one way or another.

The youngster was charged with level 2 offence and handed over three demerit points for brushing his shoulder with the Australian skipper Steve Smith while celebrating the fall of his wicket on the first day of Port Elizabeth Test.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected Rabada's claim the contact with Smith was accidental.

Nathan Lyon got off lightly, by contrast, for his contemptuous "ball drop" incident on (OK, Australians, next to!) a sprawled AB de Villiers, as did Mitch Marsh for his again fairly novel expletives to Rabada as a departing batsman in the second innings of the Port Elizabeth Test.

Both players were given one demerit point, with Marsh fined 20 per cent of his match fee and Rabada 15.

A contrite Rabada admitted he let his team down, saying, "it's going to have to stop". "I'm letting the team down and letting myself down".

Rabada already has more 10-wicket hauls than legends like Glenn McGrath, James Anderson, Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose and Allan Donald.

"If I do get banned, I will have to see it as a big learning curve and not repeat the same mistake".

Rabada earned three points for making physical contact with Steve Smith on day one, while he copped one point for screaming in the face of David Warner during a send-off on day three.

Prior to the second Test, Rabada was just one demerit point away from being suspended. While Steyn would have been a welcome addition to the squad in Rabada's absence, his availability hinged on whether he was able to play for the Titans in their Sunfoil Series fixture that starts on Thursday.

"A lot has been said about KG's fantastic rise", du Plessis said.

"I don't know what I'm thinking actually".

Even though Australia managed to remove both the batsmen, it was a matter of time before they completed the chase in 22.5 overs with six wickets in hand. "For me it's just about looking at the context of the series, and it's crucial that you have the best players playing".

Rabada received support from South African captain Faf du Plessis, who complained about the firebrand's level-two charge being the same sanction as Warner received for his stairwell altercation with Quinton de Kock at Kingsmead last week.

Rabada's case was not the first one that South Africa have contested.

"You could say that the contact (between Rabada and Smith) was very, very minimal". Disappointingly, though, following what would go down in history as the "Rabada Test", will be a couple of "Rabada-less" Tests.

"He (Rabada) has to show that passion, otherwise you can just put a bowling machine and robot to bat".

"I would like to open", he said in January but added: "It's a bit tough at the moment because there's two very good bowlers in those roles".
