Trump and Tillerson's biggest policy disagreements

Trump and Tillerson's biggest policy disagreements

The president, who made the decision to remove Tillerson "by myself", said that he and Tillerson had been "talking about this for a long time".

The outgoing secretary further used his remarks to touch on high-profile issues still facing the State Department, including its response to Russia's "troubling actions and behavior".

"Effective at the end of the day I am delegating all responsibility to deputy secretary Sullivan", Tillerson continued, before stating that he would formally step down from his position on March 31. Hours later, he was sacked, too.

October 4, 2017 - Tillerson tells reporters he is not considering leaving his post following reports that he had referred to Trump as a "moron". "He established and enjoyed relationships with his counterparts", Goldstein said. Pompeo was brought into the White House Friday after returning from an overseas trip and was offered the job formally by phone Saturday.

Tillerson's comments criticizing Russian Federation come after a year of Trump largely avoiding a direct confrontation with the country.

July 26, 2017 - Tillerson tells reporters he's "not going anywhere" amid reports of tensions with the White House over policy decisions.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she had a positive working relationship with Mr Tillerson and that would continue with Mr Pompeo.

All of the officials demanded anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. Trump faces another deadline in May to decide whether to remain in the Obama-era nuclear agreement that he campaigned aggressively against.

At the same time, the U.S. appears to be ignoring the real situation on the ground and the actions of the Washington-backed groups in particular.

In a cruel twist of fate, one of Trump's most public clashes with Tillerson came when the president accused his top diplomat of "wasting his time" pursuing contacts with North Korea. "We do see it and you need to stop", Tillerson said in the Fox interview. Trump did, however, make an announcement on Twitter.

Critics said the move would sow more instability in the volatile Trump administration and marks the departure of another moderate who sought to emphasise the United States' strong ties to its allies amid Trump's criticism.

In October, NBC news reported that Mr Tillerson called the president a "moron," something he never actually denied.

The President plans to nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to succeed Tillerson, and picked Gina Haspel, the current CIA deputy director, to take over from Pompeo.

Pompeo, a former congressman, has become a favourite of Trump's, impressing the President with his engaging approach during morning intelligence briefings. Known for his blunt-talking style, Pompeo has already been confirmed by the Senate for his current role at the Central Intelligence Agency, making it likely that he will be confirmed for the State Department role. "He will do a fantastic job!"

Both Pompeo and Haspel require Senate confirmation to assume their new posts. "The president is intent on delivering this solution through diplomatic means", Pompeo told me during a recent conversation at the American Enterprise Institute.
