EPL : Southampton sack manager Mauricio Pellegrino

Southampton manager Mauricio Pellegrino on the touch line during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Southampton at St. James Park

Southampton have sacked manager Mauricio Pellegrino after a run of one Premier League win in 17 games.

The Argentine was unable to add more attacking flair to a team that struggled for goals toward the end of last season under Claude Puel, and fans have recently been calling for Southampton to play two strikers up front to be more of a threat.

Club chiefs will want to make an appointment quickly with an FA Cup quarter-final against Wigan on Sunday.

Mark Hughes has been named as the "leading candidate" for the vacant Southampton manager's position, not Marco Silva.

Pellegrino leaves St Mary's having won just eight of his 34 matches in charge, but the Argentine has acknowledged that he can not dispute being sacked by the South-coast club. The Portuguese coach is available, having lost his job back in January, but will no doubt be conscious of a second successive Premier League relegation, having suffered the dreaded drop with Hull last season.

Southampton is in 17th place, a point and a place above the relegation zone.

"I feel so sorry to leave the club in this situation, but when you don't get results I understand the decision the club has to take", he said.

Hughes spent Tuesday locked in talks with Southampton following their decision to sack Mauricio Pellegrino on Monday.

"Some moments we managed this, some moments we couldn't, but we have been living a hard season for many reasons".

Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Newcastle left the Saints just a point outside the relegation places with only eight games of the Premier League season remaining.

As reported by The Scotsman, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers' achievements in his first two seasons in Glasgow have lead to some strong interest from Premier League club Southampton.
