Package explosions in Austin connected, police believe — TIMELINE

Police in Austin search for motive after string of explosions leave 2 dead, 2 seriously injured

That incident happened at a home located in the 4800 block of Oldfort Hill Drive.

Police believe a package bomb that killed a teenager & wounded a woman in Austin on Monday is linked to a similar bombing that killed a man earlier this month. Authorities say there are marked similarities in the three explosions.

The suspect or suspects remain at large. Investigators haven't released information about the device or possible suspects.

Austin-Travis County EMS tweeted that an explosion Monday in southeast Austin injured a woman in her 70s, who has been hospitalized.

At 6:55 a.m., police said they were called to a home in the 1100 block of Haverford Drive, near East Howard Lane and Harris Ridge Boulevard, in the Harris Ridge neighborhood.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Monday it was dispatching members of its National Response Team (NRT) to help respond to the explosions.

The home reportedly received "significant" damage from the blast.

According to the police report, neither package was delivered by the postal service, but both were left there overnight and then opened early in the morning.

One person died in the first explosion on March 2. Later that day, a 75-year-old woman was injured in a separate incident when she did the same. She was transported to an area hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.

"What we understand at this point is that earlier this morning, residents went out front, and there was a package on the front doorstep".

Authorities have warned residents that if they receive a package they are not expecting, they should contact the Austin Police Department. If the package delivered to your doorstep looks suspicious in any way. Police initially were concerned about a second package at the home, but have since cleared it and believe it to be unrelated, Manley said. Police have linked that deadly attack to a March 2 package bombing that killed a 39-year-old man in another neighborhood. The blast occurred in northeast Austin-about 12 miles north of Monday's explosions. It was first regarded as an isolated incident, but police now classify it as a homicide.

Chief Manley said the first two blasts happened at the homes of African-Americans so officials "cannot rule out hate crimes". In reference to speculation that the bombings were a spate of hate crimes, Manley added that investigators haven't identified a "specific victimology or ideology based on current evidence..." "And we will leave no stone unturned because we are not going to allow this to go on in our city".

Officers in Austin spoke about the attacks following two explosions on Monday.

"Enjoy yourself, have a good time", Manley said.

"We don't know what the motive behind these may be", he said.

"We don't want to have people be overly alarmed".

Austin is now hosting thousands of visitors for SXSW, the sprawling tech and culture festival that takes place in the downtown area every year. Hundreds of thousands of visitors have traveled to the city for the event.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced a $15,000 reward for information leading to the identification and arrest of the person or persons involved in the package blasts.
