Trump getting Washington military parade

Trump had directed the Pentagon to plan a parade for later this year, possibly on Veterans Day, to showcase the USA military's strength.

The memo, with Thursday's date, says its objective is to "provide initial guidance for the planning and execution" of a procession that would run from the White House to the Capitol and integrate with the city's annual Veterans Day parade.

The letter asked for the inclusion of the Medal of Honor Association, as well as Veterans Service Organizations, and to have veterans and Medal of Honor recipients standing around President Trump at the Capitol. Along with antique planes, a band of soldiers in Revolutionary War period uniforms will reportedly march in the parade.

That memo, below, also states the parade will "highlight the evolution of women Veterans from separate formations in World War II to today's integrated formations".

It will, however, involve "a heavy air component" with military aircraft flying overhead at the end of parade, including older aircraft "as available", the memo said.

According to a Pentagon memo, tanks will not be included to "minimise the damage done to local infrastructure".

President Donald Trump is a step closer to getting his fervently wished for military parade, which is expected to cost taxpayers between $10 and $30 million. In September 2017, President Trump had shared how impressed he was by the Bastille Day celebrations in Paris. The D.C. City Council had already tweeted its objections ("Tanks but No Tanks"). "We have a great country and we should be celebrating our country", he told Fox News Channel in a recent interview.

But it won't resemble the Bastille Day celebration in France that Trump had leaned on for inspiration.

Critics have largely panned the idea since Trump proposed it earlier this year, worrying that it would be a display of authoritarianism, carry a hefty price tag - tens of millions of dollars by some estimates - and damage the roads in Washington D.C.
