'Sex and the City' Star Cynthia Nixon Eyes NY Governor's Race

Cynthia Nixon has not yet decided if she will run in the Democratic primary against Gov. Cuomo

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday appeared to suggest that New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio may be behind a potential gubernatorial bid by actress Cynthia Nixon.

After months of considering a primary challenge to Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, she has now consulted with strategists Bill Hyers and Rebecca Katz, according to reports.

Actress Cynthia Nixon, best known for her role on the TV series "Sex and the City", is considering whether to run for governor of NY.

"Many concerned New Yorkers have been encouraging Cynthia to run for office, and as she has said previously, she will continue to explore it", Rebecca Capellan, Nixon's publicist, told the Times in a statement.

Governor Cuomo says he's unconcerned about the possibility of a primary from the left by Cynthia Nixon, and even made a joking linking to the actor and Russian interference in the USA elections.

He said, "We're hoping that either Stephanie or Cynthia Nixon run, but neither one has indicated to us that they are near a decision".

Asked during an unrelated phone press conference about Nixon possibly challenging him, Cuomo said that "people who may or may not run for governor on both sides of the aisle, that's up to them".

"In this business you can't let these things bother you, otherwise you won't last long", Cuomo said.

Cuomo, a rumored 2020 presidential contender, is seeking reelection for a third term, and would face Nixon in the party's September primary if she enters the race.

"I think it was probably either the Mayor of NY or Vladimir Putin", Cuomo said with a chuckle.

Nixon, an education activist, is a de Blasio ally and would be seen as testing Cuomo from the political left. The paper reported that she once said the Cuomo was "shortchanging the children of NY". Nixon's name recognition and celebrity status could mean she has a real shot at unseating the incumbent.

Nixon, in an interview a year ago on NBC's "Today" show, blamed Cuomo for what she called the widening gap between the richest and poorest schools.
