Trump's fortune has dropped by $400m according to Forbes

Donald Trump has crashed 222 places on the Forbes annual World's Billionaires list, after his fortune fell by $US400 million ($511 million) since he became US President a year ago.

The magazine states the business tycoon's signature property, Trump Tower, fell in value by an estimated $US41 million ($52 million) a year ago, as a result of a rise in e-commerce.

Trump has often bragged that he's worth far more than Forbes' estimates, claiming in a campaign filing in 2016 that his fortune was "in excess of $10 billion".

Gates, who topped the 2017 edition of the magazine's list, fell behind Amazon head honcho Jeff Bezos ($112 billion). Americans lead the way with a record 585 billionaires, followed by mainland China with 373.

Tesla Motors' CEO Elon Musk ranked 54th in the list with $19.9 billion.

The estimated wealth of the Hyatt hotel heir and Democratic primary contender has seen a bump of $100 million since October, bringing his net worth up to $3.5 billion, according to Forbes' latest rankings of billionaires across the globe.

Forbes said: "While the vast majority of the world's billionaires added to their fortunes in the past 12 months, 16 percent had fortunes that slipped".

Since the beginning of the year, he has made billions more and is now worth an estimated $127 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Bezos milestone, revealed in Tuesday's release of Forbes' closely watched list, underscores the growing clout of both Bezos and the company that he founded in 1994 as an online bookstore. The list ranks the richest people in the world based on their net worth.

Bezos knocked Microsoft founder Bill Gates to the No. 2 spot, after Gates spent four straight years on top. (NASDAQ:FB) CEO now has a net worth of $71 billion thanks to his popular social media platforms. They include real estate mogul Sam Zell (No. 2 in Illinois and No. 404 overall, with $4.9 billion); casino magnate Neil Bluhm (No. 5 in Illinois and No. 729 overall, with $3.2 billion), and Beanie Babies creator Ty Warner (No. 10 in Illinois and No. 887 overall, with $2.7 billion).
